Organizers of 'Earth Champions" Competition have opened their office at Ducats. Enthusiastic supporters of this initiative, the research company Granit SA have generously provided this site.

Nouveau Centre européen au Technopôle de l'Environnement d’Orbe
Les organisateurs du concours des «Champions de la Terre» ont désormais un bureau aux Ducats. Enthousiasmée par son initiative, l’entreprise de recherche Granit S.A. n’a pas hésité à lui offrir le gîte.

Un nouveau «Centre européen» vient de voir le jour dans la zone industrielle d’Orbe. Certes, pour l’instant, il est assez modeste. Mais si tout se déroule comme le prévoient les organisateurs, il est appelé à prendre prochainement de l’ampleur. Invités aux Ducats dans le cadre de la «quête pour les Champions de la Terre dans le canton de Vaud», les représentants de la Fondation Athena sont aux anges. «Il s’agit de notre deuxième projet pilote, après l’Australie, où l’idée a germé», explique Ralf Longwitz, coordinateur européen de la compétition, dont le bureau sera désormais dans le premier bâtiment – déjà construit – de ce qui deviendra le Technopôle de l’environnement. |
Petite o.n.g. deviendra grande?
Mais pourquoi un tel intérêt, de la part de Granit S.A., pour cette fondation? «Ils travaillent à la promotion de buts qui nous sont chers: protection de l’environnement et développement durable, explique son directeur, Alain Jenny. Et nous sommes spécialistes des projets pilotes prometteurs! Nous serions flattés d’être associés à une organisation non-gouvernementale qui prendrait de l’ampleur au niveau international.»
Cet argument n’a pas échappé à Claude Recordon, syndic d’Orbe, venu accueillir ses nouveaux hôtes. «Ce concours entre parfaitement dans les objectifs de la Municipalité, a-t-il affirmé. Il est un marqueur fort de nos ambitions concernant le Technopôle, donc la construction va débuter dans quelques semaines.»
Un marché d’avenir
Directeur de l’Association pour le développement du Nord vaudois, Jean-Marc Buchillier a pour sa part confirmé son soutien. «Nous avons choisi d’axer le développement de notre région sur la recherche environnementale. Parce qu’il y a dans ce domaine un marché extraordinaire, un patrimoine à préserver, ainsi que de grandes compétences. Pour la région et pour Orbe, l’installation de la Fondation Athena est une fantastique opportunité d’ouverture.»
Candidatures ouvertes
Emue d’être aussi chaleureusement accueillie, Fiona Mathews, présidente et initiatrice de cette fondation à but idéal, a rappelé les principaux objectifs de sa «quête»: «Chacun peut participer, individuellement ou dans le cadre d’une entreprise. Chacun peut aussi présenter une candidature, au moyen de nos formulaires. Le but est d’offrir à la jeunesse des héros, des champions qui ne soient pas simplement des sportifs ou des personnages de fiction, mais des gens qui œuvrent selon leurs moyens pour le bien de la planète, et qui cherchent à la préserver pour les générations à venir.»
Lancé il y a quelques semaines, le concours n’a encore recueilli que quelques candidatures. L’étude des dossiers se fera au printemps prochain. «On ne se rend pas compte du nombre de personnes qui sont actives pour l’environnement, s’anime Ralf Longwitz. S’ils peuvent se faire connaître, ce sera stimulant pour toute la population.»

A new 'European Center' has been created in the industrial Zone of Orbe. Relatively modest for the moment, if all goes as planned by the organizers its impact will grow quickly. Representatives of the Athena Foundation are delighted that the 'Quest for Earth Champions' in the Canton of Vaud as been invited to Ducats. "This is our second pilot project, after Australia, where the idea first blossomed", explains Ralf Longwitz, European Coordinator of the competition, whose office is now found in the first building already constructed of what will become the Technical Center for the Environment.
Small NGO grows up
But why such an interest on the part of Granit S.A. for this Foundation? "They work towards the promotion of goals which are of key importance to us: protection of the environment and sustainable development", explained their Director, Alain Jenny. "As we are specialists in pilot projects showing great promise in these areas, we are flattered to be associated with a non-governmental organization acting on an international level." This argument did not escape the attention of Claude Recordon, Mayor of Orbe, who was present to welcome his new guests. "This Competition enters perfectly into the objectives of the Municipality", he affirmed "It is a measure of our ambitions concerning the Technical Center, continuing construction of which will begin in a few weeks." A Market of the Future Director of the Association for the Development of the North Vaudois, Jean-Marc Buchillier, confirms his support. "We have chosen to concentrate development in our region on environmental research. Because there is an extraordinary market, a heritage to preserve, as well as exceptional competencies in this area, for the region and for Orbe, the installation of the Athena Foundation is a fantastic opportunity."
Seeking Candidates
Very moved to be so warmly welcomed, Fiona Mathews, President end Founder of the Athena Foundation, has reminded us of the principle objectives of "Everyone may participate, individuals or within the framework of a group. Anyone may also present a candidate, by submitting one of our entry forms. The objective is to offer the youth of today heroes - champions who exist not only through athletics, or found in fiction, BUT everyday people who do what they can to better our planet and who seek to preserve it to future generations."
Recently launched, the competition has already received some candidates. The study of these proposed candidacies will take place next spring. "One has little idea of the number of people who actively seek to better the environment", exclaimed Ralf Longwitz. "If we can make their efforts known, it will stimulate others to do as well."
